Pneumatic Compression Therapy:
What is pneumatic compression therapy?
Compression therapy is highly recommended as an adjunct treatment for lymphedema. Pneumatic compression therapy uses the combination of a pump and compression garments working together to reduce the centralization of lymphatic fluid. The pump and garment contract and release, mimicking a muscle contraction, which promotes the flow of lymphatic and venous fluid throughout the extremeties.
What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is the swelling of subcutaneous tissues due to the accumulation of excessive lymph fluid. The accumulation of lymph fluid results from impairment to the normal clearing function of the lymphatic system and/or from an excessive production of lymph. Lymphedema is divided into two broad classes, Primary Lymphedema and Secondary Lymphedema.
Pneumatic compression therapy is indicated for:
- Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)
- Venous stasis ulcer
- Congenital lymphedema (Milroy's Disease)
- Chronic edema
- Vascular surgeries
- Post mastectomy
- Post lumpectomy
- Post radiation therapy
- Post pelvic surgery lymphedema
- Post groin dissection lymphedema
- Venous and lymphatic insufficiency
- Post traumatic, post paralytic, and other edemas
